Aug 20, 2008, 4:30 pm North state players played a major role in California winning the 1992 AA division of the State Wars rollerhockey tournament over the weekend in Cincinnati, Ohio. Jesse Merkel had four goals and two assists, Kevin Martinez added a goal and a pair of assists, John Tucker had two assists and Cole Yakemchuck chipped in two goals and an assist. The road to the finals saw California open with losses to New Jersey (5-2) and Michigan (4-2). They beat Florida 2-1 in a very physical game moving on to the top-seeded team Pennsylvania. Jesse Echols in the net with an amazing 24 saves helps CA take the game 3-2. After a bye into the quarterfinals, California beat Texas 3-2 in the semi finals. In the finals, California downed North Carolina 2-1 on a goal four minutes into overtime. Merkel tied the game with a goal with minutes remaining in regulation, Martinez with the assist.CA came home with the gold! |
